We’re delighted to welcome back the winners of the 2012 Ely Folk Festival Band Competition to perform on Saturday night in Marquee 2. This fantastic bluegrass band vowed with their freshness and musical virtuosity, creating gorgeous harmonies with bluegrass and original material backed by wonderful guitar and mandolin playing.

The Woodberrys were the highlight of the Sore Fingers Bluegrass week student concert in 2011, and went on to play at several festivals later that year. With three singers and songwriters, they present their own songs in glorious harmony. Dick Embery the bass player, on permanent loan from Monroe’s Revenge, keeps a steady hand on the tiller. Because they all live so far apart, they haven’t yet found an opportunity to get together to do enough recording for a full CD, but hope to do soon.

In addition to their singing, Sue Pomeroy contributes mandolin, guitar, Lizzie J Taylor, guitar, and Roger Jackson, as well as playing mandolin and guitar, brings his arranging and production skills to an eclectic and refreshing Bluegrass-tinged performance.

Outright winners of the 2012 Ely Folk Festival band competition, the judges had this to say:
The Woodberrys presented a wonderful freshness and liveliness and a great full sound. Definitely a band to watch in the future.
