Celtic flavour to Sunday evening line-up

s2  There’s a definite celtic flavour to the Sunday evening concert line-up at Ely Folk Festival this year. Scotsman Dougie MacLean has built an international reputation as songwriter, composer and extraordinary performer on his own terms. His anthem Caledonia has become one of Scotland’s most popular contemporary songs. His music has been used in Hollywood films (eg Last of the Mohicans), TV Drama (eg BBC’s A Mugs Game) and he has been the subject of three BBC TV Specials. No Irish traditional band in the last dozen years has had a wider impact on audiences and music lovers throughout the world than Altan. With their exquisitely produced award-winning recordings, ranging dynamically from the most sensitive and touching old Irish songs all the way to hard hitting reels and jigs, and with their heartwarming, dynamic live performances, Altan have moved audiences from Donegal to Tokyo to Seattle. Winners of Live Act of the Year at the 2015 Scots Trad Music Awards, RURA have well and truly reinforced their reputation as one of Scotland’s most powerful folk-based bands. Their exquisitely rugged, yet refined, blend of fiddle, Highland pipes, whistle, flute, bodhran, guitar and voice has proven a resounding hit across the board. So, a toe-tapping, arm-waving, singing-along feast of celtic music in store.
